Throughout the year, we offer a diversity of workshops on different topics!


MAGUINDANAO WORKSHOPS

Join us for an introduction to Maguindanao music, dance, and culture! Our first workshop will be on April 14 to learn Silong Sa Ganding (dance) and Kulintang (music) and our second workshop will be on May 19 for an introduction to Sagayan (movement). Both workshops will be from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at Kubo Long Beach.


Pangalay Workshop

in collaboration with Pangalay Circle

An introduction to Pangalay, a dance form unique to the Sama-Tausug people of the Southern Philippines, led by cultural worker and interdisciplinary artist, Kim Requesto of Pangalay Circle. They shared what they have learned from Culture Bearer, Auntie Lingling.


T’boli Dance Workshop

in collaboration with Parangal Dance Company

An introduction to dance and culture of the T'Boli people from the Southern Philippines, led by dance and music practitioners from the Parangal Dance Company. They shared what they have learned from Culture Bearers:
Boi Myrna, Boi Rosie, Boi Rosie Sula, Datu Allen Sula, Lyn Buti Lambago, and Silid Awed.

 

The Impact of Asian Women in World History

PCN Masterclass: The Mindanao Suite

in collaboration with Ube Arte
and the
Pakaraguian Kulintang Ensemble

A Pilipino Culture Night (PCN) Masterclass on the “Mindanao Suite,” led by professional dance and music researchers and cultural practitioners.

The attendees learned about the the history of PCNs and the Mindanao Suite, the origins of Singkil, and got hands-on experience dancing Singkil and playing kulintang!


Virtual Workshops (2020)

Our Virtual Workshops were created and facilitated in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic in lieu of our annual in-person Youth Summer Program. Our workshops covered various topics related to Philippine culture, history, and language. Recordings are now available for the public below!

Jose Rizal, Filipino Hero

Facilitated by Dr. Brandon Reilly. What’s your idea of a hero? Watch our workshop and learn more about Jose Rizal, a Filipino author who wrote about the injustices of Spanish colonial rule, and in turn, sparked the Philippine Revolution!

 Baybayin, an Ancient Philippine Writing System

Facilitated by Polly Dela Rosa. Did you know that different Filipino groups have writing systems other than Latin? Watch our workshop and learn more about one of our writing systems, Baybayin! In this video we will learn how to read and write in this pre-colonial script, so get your pens and papers ready!

 

Mindanao culture and Music

Facilitated by Dr. Mary Talusan-Lacanlale. How much do you know about Mindanao, the southernmost region of the Philippines? Watch our workshop and learn more about the geography, culture, ethnolinguistic groups, clothing, and music of the people of Mindanao. We also explore the different ways to wear a ‘malong,’ and listen in on a performance with kulintang gongs!

Tagalog Time

Facilitated by KC Alcantara. Learn Tagalog with Filipino Cultural School today! In this online workshop, we will go over basic Tagalog greetings and introductions for beginners. We’ll be using this knowledge to make our own Tagalog-language comics and drawings, so get those pens and papers ready!
